Join us for a day celebrating beautiful butterflies and take part in the nation’s Big Butterfly Count with bug expert Richard Jones. 

Colour Animated

Free, playscheme friendly

  • Times: 10am - 4.30pm
  • Location: Music Gallery Performance Space

Drop in to watch some short animations inspired by our new exhibition Colour: The Rainbow Revealed. The animations have been created by second year students on the London College of Communication’s BA Animation course.   

Everyone welcome - just drop in. Suitable for all ages.

Butterfly Talks

  • Location: the Pavilion in the Gardens

Join entomologist (insect expert) Richard ‘Bugman’ Jones for some family friendly talks about butterflies.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Limited spaces. Suitable for children aged 5+.

Nature Notebooks

Free, playscheme friendly 

  • Times: 11am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 3.30pm
  • Location: Gardens, next to the Sound Garden

Join our art and craft tutors to make your very own Nature Notebook, then use it to explore our gardens and record the things you find.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Drop In. Suitable for all ages.

Butterfly stories

  • Location: the Bandstand

Join Sierra Tasi Baker, a young Kwakwaka'wakw, Coast Salish and Tlingit storyteller from the West Coast of British Columbia Canada. She will be sharing stories of her family history, a Butterfly legend that describes her family lineage, and her favourite story from the collection: Raven Steals the Sun. 

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Limited spaces. Suitable for children aged 3+.

Big Butterfly Count

Free, playscheme friendly 

  • Times: 1.30pm - 3.30pm
  • Location: the Nature Trail

Join the ‘Bugman’ down on our Nature Trail to see how many different types of butterfly you can spot.

Richard 'Bugman' Jones is a nationally acclaimed entomologist, a fellow of the Royal Entomological Society and of the Linnean Society of London, and past president of the British Entomological and Natural History Society.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Drop In. Suitable for all ages.

Plonk Crazy Golf

  • Times: 10am - 5pm
  • Location: Gardens

Plonk Crazy Golf is open all day for you to  test your wits against a course featuring bonkers ball runs, loop-the-loops, heroic hills, balancing-beams, and some Horniman-themed specials. 

£4 child / £6 adult / £13.50 family ticket. Tickets available from the Golf course entrance on the day or online in advance.
