About this event

Come along to these fun, family sessions that will explore a different theme every week using objects from our handling collection. Themes will include animals, costumes, masks, music and toys to name just a few.

Sessions are aimed at families with children aged 3+. The first two sessions at 11am and 11.45am are aimed at younger children in particular. 

Themes and dates

  • 6 Jan: Masks – find out about some of the special occasions that people wear masks for, then try on some of the masks from our collection
  • 13 Jan: Music – find out why people from around the world play music and then enjoy playing some of the instruments from our collection
  • 20 Jan: Flying Animals – find out how different birds and animals fly and then touch taxidermy animals from our collection.
  • 27 Jan: Storytelling – Find out why people around the world tell stories and then explore some objects from our collections that could inspire you to create your own stories.
  • 3 Feb: Masks – find out about some of the special occasions that people wear masks for, then try on some of the masks from our collection
  • 10 Feb: Carnival – find out why and how people in different countries celebrate Carnival, and then join in the celebration by trying on masks and playing instruments from our collection

    Members' Exclusive: 
    Members will be able to attend an exclusive session between 10:15am-10:45am. Contact members@horniman.ac.uk to book your spot. 
  • 17 Feb: Chinese New Year – find out how Chinese New Year is celebrated, then try on masks and costumes from our collection
  • 24 Feb: Costume – find out why people in different parts of the world wear different kinds of clothes, then try on some of the costumes we have.
  • 3 Mar: India – explore some of the Indian objects from our collections and find out about some of the different festivals celebrated in India
  • 17 Mar: Music – find out why people from around the world play music and then enjoy playing some of the instruments from our collection

  • 7 Apr: Ocean – find out about different creatures that live in the Ocean and then get up close to some amazing objects from our collection
  • 14 Apr: Masks – find out about some of the special occasions that people wear masks for, then try on some of the masks from our collection
  • Sat 21: Apr Costume – find out why people in different parts of the world wear different kinds of clothes, then try on some of the costumes we have.
  • 28 Apr: Nature – find out why different mini-beasts, animals and plants are so important to people and the planet and then touch amazing objects from our collection.
  • 5 May: Flying Animals – find out how different birds and animals fly and then touch taxidermy animals from our collection.
  • 12 May: Music – find out why people from around the world play music and then enjoy playing some of the instruments from our collection
  • 19 May: Toys – find out why toys and playing are so important, then have fun playing with some of the toys from our collection. 
  • 26 May: Puppets – find out how puppets from different countries are used to tell stories, then have a go at making the puppets move yourself.
