Bones and Teeth
Handle a range of real animal skulls such as tiger, dolphin and crocodile, and study their teeth to identify carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
Compare to human teeth and look at the different types. Challenge yourself to guess the animal from the mystery skulls and skeletons.
The Horniman is the perfect place to explore your topic further. Explore live mammals and birds living in our free Animal Walk (open from 12.30pm), plants and wildlife across our 16 acres of Gardens, or the relationship between animals and humans in our World Gallery (which includes a number of taxidermy specimens).
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the function of a skeleton.
- Predict what an animal would eat from looking at their teeth.
- Identify some animal skeletons and/or skulls.
“We used visual clues to make deductions, for instance about animal diets. Extended/consolidating language of bones and skeletons…” Teacher
Please note that our Natural History Gallery Balcony is now closed as part of a major 2 year redevelopment, Nature + Love. Our Natural History Gallery will close on the 4 March. The rest of our Galleries, displays and Gardens will be open as usual, with plenty across the site to support your topic (from our free Animal Walk, to our World Gallery). Our schools workshops are unaffected.
Our new, free Natural History Pop Up exhibition is now open!
