hat (clothing: headwear); textile

Oval child's hat made from dark violet cotton velvet with a flat top. The textile is decorated with a metal thread couchwork pattern on the top and sides. The swagged floral and foliate patterns are couched using curls of metal wrapped wire or metal strip, and sequins. The strip used is either flat or curved, and of varying widths. The tightness of the curl also changes with the different materials used. The hat is lined with a black, tabby-woven textile held in place with diagonal lines of white machine stitching.
