Index card reads: One brass key, round, cupped, mounted in turned ring. Black horn mounts and mouthpiece. The maker was probably Jean Francois Martin 1827-1840. Comments by Douglas MacMillan following examination of instrument on 16.6.11: Type: French flageolet à pompe, boxwood with horn mounts and brass key. Pillar mounted key for a# with cupped flap. Holes: 4+2. Stamped on spong chamber and head: MARTIN / A PARIS. Langwill: Firm of Martin frères flourished ca.1840-1927 and used several marks: the collection catalogue date of 1827-40 suggests Jean Baptiste Martin but the mark is not consistent with this maker.
